Modelling fire spread and behaviour II

Modelling fire spread and behaviour II

The 2nd workshop on “Fire Spread and Behaviour Modelling in a context of Climate Change”, was held in Sassari, Italy, from 7 to 11 March 2016.  The workshop was organized by the ClimaSouth project as part of its support to the implementation of a national activity in Algeria. The first four days were dedicated to formal lectures, computer exercises and training, with the aim of analysing fire exposure and vulnerability to climate change in the study area of Tlemcen, Algeria. The fifth day was devoted to a field trip to Northern Sardinia, which allowed for a useful exchange of information on methods used by the Sardinian Forest Service to monitor, fight and prevent wildfires. The lectures and hands-on exercises were coordinated by Valentina Bacciu and Michele Salis of the CMCC-IAFES Division based in Sassari.During the first part of the workshop, presentations focussed on methods to characterize fire regime and exposure under current and future climate conditions. In addition, data collected by Algerian experts on historic fires, weather, vegetation, topography, and other ancillary data were presented and analysed. The training component helped to deepen the knowledge and capabilities of the group of experts in the use of fire spread and behaviour models. It also assisted in the preparation of the input data for the characterization of fire regime, run fire models, and examine methodologies which have been applied in Sardinia.
