GHG modelling /LEAP training in Tel Aviv

A GHG Strategy Development was recently initiated by the Ministry of Environment Protection (MoEP) in Israel. The process is managed by an inter-ministerial committee with the objectives to establishing a national target and strategy for GHG emissions reduction by 2030 that will be submitted to the Government for approval, then to the UNFCCC secretariat.

In this context, Israel asked ClimaSouth to support the process with a two day workshop attended by 20 participants for a LEAP software training to learn how to develop a Business As Usual (BAU) and then an abatement scenario. The LEAP training is held in Tel Aviv, March 3 and 4 and followed by hands on advisory session on March 4th with the technical expertise of Charlie Heaps from the Stockholm Environment Institute.

  • Currently, the project team is in the data collection phase with the aim to establish a BAU scenario. It is envisaged that the first stage is going to be completed by March 20th, 2015.
  • The second stage is due to be completed by May 2015 with the development of abatement scenarios for the Israeli economy up to 2030.
  • The final report is due to be submitted to the government by June 2015 The resulted national GHG reduction target is going to be Israel's INDC and the strategy can be considered as the NAMA (or collection of NAMAswithin the over-arching strategy).
