International congress on restoring Mediterranean forests

International congress on restoring Mediterranean forests

An international congress on the "Sustainable restoration of Mediterranean forests”  will be held  in Palermo, Italy, from 19 to 21 April 2017. The Mediterranean region is one of the ‘hot spots’ of ongoing climate change worldwide. The forests in the region are rapidly changing due to abandonment in many areas or to increasing human impact in others, but also to the spread of alien plant species and pathogens. The conference aims to bring together researchers, managers, and policy makers to discuss these challenges and how to integrate existing knowledge about forest landscape restoration and forest adaptation in the Mediterranean region with climate change and emerging societal demands.

The Scientific Committee for the Congress has selected 4 key themes which will guide the program:

·       Forest restoration in Mediterranean climates (Europe/other continents)

·       Scientific and technological advancements for a sustainable forest management

·       Political, social, and economical implications related to forest restoration activities

·       Forest restoration, landscape management, and ecosystem services

The event is organized by the Italian Society of Botany (SBI), the Italian Society for Forestry Restoration (ISFR / SERE), the International Union of Forest Research Organization (IUFRO), the Italian Academy of Forest Sciences (AISF), the University of Palermo (UNIPA), and the University of Insubria (UNINSUBRIA).

The deadline for registration is the 31st December 2016 and the deadline for the Call for Abstracts is the 15th January 2017.
