Climate Action – lessons from Jordan

Release of new video reportage on climate action in Jordan.  Energy needs in Jordan are increasing, with about 96% of supplies relying on imported fossil fuels. The recently released video reportage examines how current investments in the energy sector may help the greening of the Jordanian economy, while contributing to climate action.

Greening of the economy. Jordan has pledged to unconditionally reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 1.5%  before 2030, compared to business as usual levels. The video explores how this is going to be achieved and what is already being done to initiate the process. It looks at the anticipated benefits of building the Green economy and at some of the specific measures being implemented to enhance the resilience of the country to climate change and adapt to its present and future impacts.

The role of the international community. Jordan has committed to reduce its GHGs emissions by an additional 12.5 % by 2030, subject to the provision of international financial support and the availability of adequate means of implementation. The video reportage asks how this further commitment could be achieved,  and looks at key examples of what the international community is providing in terms of technical support and climate finance.

The reportage was produced by the EU-funded ClimaSouth project, in collaboration with Jordan’s  Ministry of Environment and the EU delegation to the country.
