A new partnership to help developing countries implement the Paris Agreement

A new partnership to help developing countries implement the Paris Agreement

Many developing countries have made their first ever commitment to comply with climate targets with the adoption of the Paris Agreement. At the seventh Petersberg Climate Dialogue, held in Berlin on 03-05 July 2016, a new partnership was announced to assist countries transform these targets into specific strategies and measures. The partnership has been initiated jointly by the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and the German Ministry for the Environment, Building, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety together with the World Resources Institute (WRI).

The goal of the NDC Partnership is to support developing countries in specifying and implementing their nationally determined contributions. It aims to help merge existing climate and development goals and to achieve greater harmonization among the various donor programs. The partnership will be officially launched at the forthcoming Marrakech climate conference in November.

Since 2010, the annual dialogue has provided the opportunity for countries to engage in an informal exchange of experiences on international climate policy. At the latest event over 30 Ministers and their representatives convened, as well as the current and the incoming Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC, the Secretary General of the OECD and high-level representatives of Greenpeace International, of Allianz SE and of the UN Secretary General, as well as the Co-chairs of the APA met at the invitation of the governments of Morocco and Germany.
