COP23 to showcase innovative approaches to Measurement, Reporting and Verification (MRV)

The European Union (EU) experience in the Enlargement and Neighbourhood countries. Innovative approaches endorsed by the EU to enhance Measurement, Reporting and Verification (MRV) will be showcased at a dedicated side event to be held during the forthcoming COP23 in Bonn, Germany. Drawing on the expertise developed through supporting Enlargement and Neighbourhood countries, the European Commission will lead the organization of the side event that will take place in the EU Pavilion, Bonn Zone,  on 9th November, 2017, at 16h-17h30.

Transparency of climate action is essential to secure the success of the Paris Agreement. It is important that countries build their capacity to undertake MRV to track, evaluate and communicate progress on the implementation of their commitments, especially their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). The European Union (EU) and its Member States have broad MRV experience, and they provide ample support to third countries in building their domestic MRV capacity, within their bilateral engagements and through specific projects that support these relationships.

The side event will provide an overview of three specific projects. The focus will be on new solutions which can potentially be replicated in other contexts: two major EU-funded projects, the ClimaSouth project and the Regional Implementation of Paris Agreement Project (RIPAP), and Information Matters, a project supported by Germany through the Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). It is anticipated that speakers will include Elina Bardram (DG-CLIMA, European Commission), Oscar Zarzo (GIZ and Representative of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources Protection, Georgia), Justin Goodwin and Monique Voogt (RIPAP),  Vahakn Kabakian (Ministry of Environment, Lebanon) and Andrea Rizzo and Dario Berardi (ClimaSouth project).
