Showcasing EU-funded climate change projects in the South Mediterranean region

EU-funded climate change projects operating in the South Mediterranean region were presented during a lively side-event at the COP22 on 15 November. The event showcased the work of the Facility for Policy Dialogue on Climate Change and the CES-MEDClimaSouth and SUDEP South projects, highlighting their respective achievements to date. Michael Köhler, Director Neighbourhood South, European Commission, DG for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Negotiations opened the session, followed by remarks of Jorge Borrego Deputy Secretary General – Energy and Climate Change Union for the Mediterranean.

The event raised awareness about the way the EU is helping to face some of the key climate related challenges in the Mediterranean region, as well as the interaction and synergies amongst the different projects. Köhler recalled the crucial importance of coordinated efforts between all countries, through both “north-south” and “south-south” cooperation, to tackle transboundary issues such as climate change. He highlighted that the EU will continue to support climate action in the South Mediterranean through its current projects and stepping up funds in the crucial sectors of energy and sustainable cities. Tackling climate change is a joint endeavor calling for efforts from local, national and international stakeholders to develop strategies and plans to attract the interest and resources of the private sector and through bilateral and multilateral cooperation.

ClimaSouth presented the approach of the project in assisting partner countries in their mitigation and negotiation efforts towards reaching a global climate deal in 2015, as well as supporting the transfer of knowledge and practical tools to enhance climate resilience. Although still not officially signed, the team leader of ClimaSouth also confirmed the extension of the project through December 2017, highlighting the work projected for the coming months to operationalize the Paris Agreement. The priority will be placed on the enactment of the INDCs, with a focus on accessing climate finance, Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV), mainstreaming of climate change and enhancement of climate resilience in partner countries.
